The Coat of Arms of Spain is the national heraldic symbol of the Kingdom of Spain. Adopted officially in 1981, it consists of a shield divided into four quarters representing the historical kingdoms of Spain: Castile (a castle), Len (a lion), Navarre (nine fesses in gules), and Aragon (four pallets argent and gules). A shield of Portugal, as a symbol of the union between the two crowns during the reign of Philip V, is displayed above the main shield. The motto "Plus Ultra" (Further Beyond) appears below the shield, representing Spain's global exploration history. The Coat of Arms is widely used in Spanish government and military institutions, as well as on official documents and currency.
